Best Places to Travel in November: U.S. and International Picks
Our ten U.S. and international November picks, with practical tips to shape a trip around your interests.
November can offer very different vacations: autumn colors in Japan, a city break in Barcelona, beach time in Aruba or a road trip through Arizona. Choosing well begins with deciding what you want from the month. Are you hoping to walk comfortably, escape cooler weather, see a seasonal landscape, or combine a city stay with a cruise?
Our selection brings together five U.S. options and five international ones already featured on Travel and Tips 55 Plus. This is a curated starting point, not an objective ranking or a promise of particular weather. Use it to narrow your interests, then compare dates, conditions and the rhythm of the trip.
Orlando, Florida: plan the days as well as the parks
Orlando suits travelers whose priorities include theme parks and related attractions. November can provide a different experience from a summer visit, with holiday programming beginning on schedules set by each venue. Confirm the dates and tickets for the specific events you want rather than assuming they begin together.
Do not count only the number of parks you can fit into a stay. Think about travel between accommodation and entrances, walking, meals and breaks. A less scheduled day can provide time for other activities or recovery before another early start. Choose accommodation that supports your actual plans.
Andrea’s Tip: Put your most important park experiences on the itinerary first. Build the rest around them, including transportation and lighter days.
Miami and Fort Lauderdale: city, coast and cruise
These cities can provide a waterfront stay on their own or a starting point for a Caribbean cruise. Decide whether your main interests are beaches, neighborhoods, restaurants or time near the departure port. That decision should shape where you stay.
A pre-cruise visit is more enjoyable when you allow time to explore rather than treating the city as a transfer. Also compare the specific airport and cruise port: a flight to one city and sailing from the other may require additional transportation. Check the conditions for beach activities during your dates.
Andrea’s Tip: Map airport, hotel and port together before booking. A convenient combination can matter more than one low-priced component.
Oahu, Hawaii: choose the coast for the activity
Oahu can combine a Waikiki base with drives and outings elsewhere on the island. November also marks the beginning of the powerful winter surf season on northern shores. Seeing skilled surfers and large waves can be part of the trip, but watching surf and choosing a swimming beach are different decisions.
Ocean conditions vary by day and location. Use local safety information and lifeguard advice rather than a beautiful photo to judge where to enter the water. Build an island day around a few places you want to enjoy instead of trying to turn every viewpoint into a stop.
Andrea’s Tip: Leave flexibility for conditions. A beach, scenic drive and cultural outing can provide different ways to enjoy a day.
Las Vegas, Nevada: balance entertainment and exploration
Las Vegas can suit a trip built around shows, dining and city experiences. You can also investigate nearby desert outings if they interest you. Consider how late you want your evenings to run before planning the next morning.
A hotel on the Strip can look close to everything, but distances within properties and between them still matter. Choose a location related to your plans and consider transportation for outings beyond the city. Check the forecast and daylight before planning outdoor activities.
Andrea’s Tip: Avoid scheduling an ambitious early excursion immediately after your most important late-night show. Let the rhythm of the trip make sense.
Arizona: one road trip, several environments
Scottsdale, Sedona and the Grand Canyon can form a varied road-trip idea, but they should not be treated as interchangeable climates. Elevation and geography affect how the day feels. Research each stop separately and plan the driving route, daylight and overnight locations.
Do not make every scenic stop a hotel change. Time in a base lets you enjoy it without repeatedly packing. Compare the value of adding another destination with the additional driving and logistics it introduces.
Andrea’s Tip: Pack layers and inspect the forecast for the Grand Canyon separately from Scottsdale. A general Arizona average is not enough.
Japan: match your dates to autumn colors
Japan's autumn foliage moves through regions on different schedules. The Japan National Tourism Organization describes November as a major autumn-travel month and notes that Kyoto's foliage season begins relatively late, around mid-November. Actual color timing varies with the year and location.
Tokyo and Kyoto can provide a starting plan, with other stops selected around your interests and the seasonal progression. Leave time to enjoy gardens and neighborhoods rather than concentrating every visit into one day. Check whether seasonal evening openings or special visits require separate tickets.
Andrea’s Tip: Build a flexible shortlist of foliage places and use current local reports as the trip approaches. Do not rely on one tree being at its peak on one exact day.
Riviera Maya, Mexico: choose the resort and the outings together
A Riviera Maya stay can focus on the hotel, combine beach time with excursions, or divide time among different areas. Before choosing, decide how often you expect to leave the property and what you want to visit.
Check beach arrangements, the meal plan and the transfer time to your chosen outings. November does not guarantee uninterrupted sunshine, so consider what you would enjoy on a changeable day. A hotel chosen solely for its pool photograph may not support the wider trip you have imagined.
Andrea’s Tip: List two or three outings before selecting a resort, then check the practical distance to them.
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic: know your resort experience
Punta Cana can suit travelers who want a vacation centered on a resort. The choice of property is therefore central to the experience. Compare atmosphere, dining, facilities and the way the room is positioned within the property.
All-inclusive terms vary. Verify reservations, selected venues, activities and transfers rather than treating the label as a complete description. Consider how much time you want around families, entertainment or quieter spaces. Review recent information for the specific hotel and your dates.
Andrea’s Tip: Picture a full day at the property. The best fit is the one whose everyday experience you would enjoy.
Barcelona, Spain: a city stay with an optional sea journey
Barcelona can provide a trip focused on architecture, neighborhoods, museums and food. Choose accommodation near your main interests, then group visits geographically. Allow space for walking and meals rather than turning the city into a checklist.
If you are considering a transatlantic repositioning cruise after the stay, check the actual sailing dates and route first. These journeys can involve substantial sea time and different arrival arrangements. They are a particular type of vacation, not simply a substitute for a flight.
Andrea’s Tip: Compare the city stay and cruise as one complete itinerary, including flights, luggage and the destination where the sailing ends.

Aruba: warmth with realistic weather expectations
Aruba offers a warm-weather option, but November falls within the island's modest October-to-December rainy season. The tourism board describes short, intermittent showers as typical of that period; this is not a promise for any particular week.
Select your base according to whether you want easy beach access, restaurants nearby or more independent exploring. Plan beach activities around actual conditions. Leave room for other experiences if weather changes rather than expecting every day to follow an identical schedule.
Andrea’s Tip: A destination can be a good seasonal choice without having guaranteed sunshine. Look at the whole experience, not one weather slogan.
