20 Wonderful Places to Celebrate Christmas: U.S. and International Ideas
Twenty destinations in the U.S. and abroad: what makes each special, and how to choose the right dates.
Christmas away from home can be a mountain village, a beautifully illuminated city, a traditional market or an island celebration. Before selecting a destination, decide which version appeals to you. Are you hoping for a festive atmosphere throughout the visit, a special Christmas Eve tradition, or activities on Christmas Day itself?
Those are different travel plans. Many markets and performances finish before December 25 even when decorations remain. The dates below were checked on October 12, 2026. Check the venue's current hours again before buying tickets or arranging a day around a particular event. Snow is not guaranteed simply because a destination appears in a Christmas guide.
Ten U.S. destinations
1. Leavenworth, Washington
Leavenworth's Bavarian-style streets and mountain setting create a distinctive Christmas-village experience. The town's Christmastown program combines lights and seasonal activities. It suits travelers who want the place itself to provide much of the festive atmosphere.
The 2026 festivities run November 27–December 24, while the lights continue from Thanksgiving through February. Visit before December 25 for the advertised Christmastown activities. Choose accommodation with the route to the center in mind, and plan your arrival transportation for winter conditions rather than assuming a simple drive in any weather.
2. New York City, New York
New York combines the Rockefeller Center tree, decorated shopfronts, skating and seasonal shows. It can suit travelers who want a city trip with Christmas layered into the sightseeing rather than one single attraction.
Group outings by area and choose the performances you care about before filling the schedule. Leave time for meals and travel between neighborhoods. A hotel near your evening plans can make the trip more comfortable. Reserve important experiences and holiday meals separately; a festive street does not tell you which businesses will open on December 25.
3. Chicago, Illinois
Chicago's holiday traditions include Christkindlmarket, the city's tree and seasonal light displays. Its combination of outdoor atmosphere and indoor cultural experiences makes it worth considering for a holiday city break.
Plan an itinerary with warming breaks rather than continuous outdoor stops. Study each attraction's dates and hours, particularly for the holiday itself. A visit to a market, a restaurant and a performance can create a balanced day without trying to see every light display. Choose your hotel based on the specific experiences you want and practical winter transportation.
4. Asheville, North Carolina
Christmas at Biltmore is the central draw: decorated rooms, the estate's grounds and the option of Candlelight Christmas Evenings. The daytime and evening experiences are different, so compare them before buying admission.
Biltmore lists its overall Christmas season from November 3, 2026 to January 10, 2027; the candlelight program finishes January 9. Reserve the experience and date you want rather than assuming any admission includes an evening visit. Build time around the estate and selected Asheville activities. One memorable evening can be more rewarding than rushing through several seasonal events.
5. Williamsburg, Virginia
Colonial Williamsburg provides a historically themed holiday setting with traditional decorations, music and seasonal programs. It suits travelers interested in the setting and interpretation as well as the festive celebration.
The 2026 Grand Illumination dates are December 5, 12 and 19. If that celebration is your priority, travel for one of those weekends rather than waiting until Christmas week. Review the day's schedule, admission requirements and walking. Choose a pace that leaves room to appreciate the details of the historic area.
6. San Antonio, Texas
The illuminated River Walk gives San Antonio a recognizable holiday setting. A stay can combine walks, a river cruise, food and local traditions without making snow the central attraction.
Choose accommodation that supports the parts of the River Walk and downtown you want to enjoy. Reserve meals for December 24 and 25 and check event dates instead of assuming the holiday parade occurs during Christmas week. A Christmas visit can remain festive even when your schedule is mostly relaxed walks, meals and time together.
7. New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans brings its own traditions to the season, including Réveillon dinners, music and Christmas Eve bonfires in the surrounding river region. Here, the word Réveillon can refer to a traditional Christmas-season meal, not just New Year's Eve.
If the bonfires are a priority, verify the location and transportation. They should not be treated as a French Quarter activity you can simply walk to from any hotel. Reserve a dinner that matches your interests and check which restaurants open during the holidays. Food and local culture can become the heart of this trip.
8. Santa Fe, New Mexico
Santa Fe offers a different visual and cultural Christmas experience, especially the Canyon Road Farolito Walk on Christmas Eve. Small illuminated lanterns and the adobe setting provide a celebration distinct from a large urban light show.
Include December 24 if the walk is your main reason to visit. Consider evening conditions, walking surfaces and how you will return to your accommodation. Leave daytime space for the city rather than scheduling only the holiday event. Plan dinner around the evening's timing and confirm arrangements in advance.
9. Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston combines its historic setting with seasonal decorations and experiences, including the Holiday Festival of Lights in the James Island area. It can work for travelers who enjoy food, architecture and a festive atmosphere together.
The historic center and the light festival require different logistics. Plan transportation instead of treating them as adjacent stops. Select a few outings, make time for meals and investigate the current holiday calendar. Check whether a particular historic-house visit or performance runs during your chosen dates.
10. Park City, Utah
Park City's decorated Main Street and mountain setting create a winter-focused holiday option. Skiing can be part of the trip, but it need not be the only reason to go.
Decide whether you want a ski-centered stay, time in town, or a mixture of activities. That decision should guide lodging and transportation. Verify what is open and book important experiences. Consider the practical demands of cold weather and winter surfaces; a mountain-town holiday is most enjoyable when the clothing and daily plan support it.
Ten international destinations
1. Vienna, Austria
Vienna's markets range from major squares to palace settings. This variety makes it useful for a multi-day Christmas stay rather than a trip built around one market.
For 2026, the tourism board lists Christmas Day opening at Schönbrunn and Stephansplatz, while several other markets close December 23. Select specific markets by date and area. Combine outdoor visits with indoor experiences and confirmed meal reservations. Do not assume the hours of one market apply to another.
2. Strasbourg, France
Strasbourg combines Alsatian architecture, traditional markets and the major tree at Place Kléber. It can suit travelers looking for a place where the historic setting and Christmas atmosphere work together.
The 2026 market opens November 27. Confirm closing dates and holiday hours when planning; do not assume stalls remain open because decorations are still visible. Group central visits so you can enjoy the streets without repeatedly crossing the city. Allow enough time to appreciate the setting beyond taking one photograph of the tree.
3. Nuremberg, Germany
Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt is a strong choice for travelers interested in a traditional German market, regional food and crafts. The market experience is the main reason to choose the dates carefully.
The 2026 season runs November 27–December 24. Arrive before Christmas Day if visiting the stalls is central to your plan. Compare accommodation with access to the historic center, and leave time for the city as well as the market. A visit in the weeks before Christmas can serve a different purpose from staying over the holiday itself.
4. Prague, Czech Republic
Prague's historic squares provide a striking setting for its seasonal markets. A city stay can combine festive visits with architecture and time exploring neighborhoods.
The Old Town Square market is listed for November 28, 2026–January 6, 2027. This makes Prague worth considering for dates after Christmas too, although specific daily hours still need checking. Select accommodation based on your plans and consider steps and uneven streets. A central location is helpful only when the actual route works for you.
5. London, England
London's Christmas appeal includes illuminated streets, decorated shops and seasonal experiences across several areas. Choose a few routes rather than trying to see every display in one evening.
Christmas Day requires a separate plan: regular public transport does not operate. Many attractions also close. Arrange accommodation, meals and any necessary transport accordingly. Walking through illuminated areas can still be enjoyable, but your December 25 schedule should not depend on the Underground or assume normal museum hours.
6. Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh's festive program brings markets and seasonal activities into the city's historic setting. The center can provide a base for a trip that combines the celebration with a broader city visit.
The announced 2026/27 season runs November 14–January 3. Check individual attraction hours, including Christmas Day, and plan for terrain and weather. Choose accommodation with evening access in mind. If you extend the stay toward New Year, treat those events as a separate booking and planning decision.
7. Copenhagen, Denmark
Christmas in Tivoli offers decorated gardens, lights, stalls and seasonal experiences. It can be part of a city break rather than requiring your whole vacation to revolve around rides.
The announced season is November 13, 2026–January 3, 2027. Plan a visit that includes darkness if you want to see the illumination, and check opening on your exact date. Compare admission and any separately priced experiences. Make time for other parts of Copenhagen and warming breaks between outdoor activities.
8. Québec City, Canada
Québec City's historic setting and seasonal decorations offer an option for travelers drawn to a European-style Christmas atmosphere in North America. The German market can be an important part of that visit.
Use the organizer's specific 2026 schedule: November 19–December 23, with closure on December 24, 25 and 26. Include days before the 24th if the market matters most. Plan the rest of the visit around current conditions, appropriate footwear and confirmed restaurants. Decorations remaining after the market closes do not mean the same program continues.
9. Rovaniemi, Finland
Rovaniemi's Santa Claus Village and Arctic Circle setting make it a distinctive Christmas idea. It can appeal to families and adults interested in winter experiences rather than only a conventional city break.
Select activities by comfort, interest and practical requirements. Check durations, transportation and what clothing is provided or needed. Leave room between outings and confirm the holiday timetable. A few well-chosen experiences can be more enjoyable than a crowded schedule designed to fit every advertised activity.
10. Funchal, Madeira, Portugal
Funchal's festive lights, market experiences and local traditions offer an island-based Christmas choice. The announced celebration period runs December 1, 2026–January 10, 2027.
December 23 is particularly relevant for the traditional market night. Include it if you want that part of the local celebration. Consider hills and the route from your accommodation when choosing a base. If you remain for New Year, plan that evening separately; Christmas atmosphere and a fireworks-viewing arrangement are different elements of the trip.
Choose the experience, then the dates
For a village setting, consider Leavenworth. For a major city, compare New York or London. For markets on Christmas Day, examine the specific Vienna options. For a distinctive Christmas Eve tradition, look at Santa Fe or the New Orleans region. For an Arctic winter experience, investigate Rovaniemi.
Start with your priorities, then confirm the calendar, access and holiday meals. Our Christmas cruise selection remains available if you would prefer to celebrate at sea. Tell Andrea which version of Christmas appeals to you and how long you want to travel so we can build a suitable plan.
